One Cut. Absolute Control.

English Edition|Shozaburo Tailoring Shears

One cut tells the story

A professional pair of tailoring shears should do more than separate fabric. The lower blade should glide along the cutting table, the fabric should stay flat, and the cut should remain clean from heel to tip. This combination of sharpness, balance and control is why Shozaburo is widely regarded by tailors and sewing professionals as one of the world’s finest names in dressmaking shears.

“World-class” is not an empty slogan here. It is the confidence created by a clean, stable and repeatable cut—the reason a craftsperson keeps the same tool within easy reach, year after year.

A Tokyo cutlery tradition

After Japan’s Meiji-era sword prohibition, Tokyo swordsmiths redirected their forging and sharpening skills toward practical cutting tools. As Western clothing and tailoring spread, dressmaking shears became essential. Taito City’s official traditional-crafts profile records that Shozaburo craftsman Yasunobu Miura inherited the family trade and has more than sixty years of experience. Modern machinery may support selected processes, but blade geometry, alignment, balance and final adjustment still depend on practiced judgement.

Why professionals value Shozaburo

1. Clean cutting from heel to tip — High-grade cutlery steel and precise blade contact help reduce fabric pushing, snagging and ragged edges.

2. Balanced handling — The relationship between blade weight, pivot and enamelled handle helps the shears feel controlled during long cutting sessions.

3. Confidence on delicate fabrics — Silk, lining and fine woven cloth quickly reveal a poor edge. A sharp, properly adjusted pair produces a cleaner cut with less distortion.

4. Serviceable for the long term — Shozaburo shears can be professionally sharpened and adjusted instead of being discarded when the edge eventually dulls.

Size guide

9 in / approx. 23 cm — Agile and precise. A good choice for smaller hands, home sewing, curves, fine fabrics and detailed pattern work.

10 in / approx. 25 cm — The versatile all-rounder. It balances cutting length with control and is the safest starting point if you want one principal pair.

11 in / approx. 28 cm — Longer cutting strokes for coats, skirts, furnishing fabrics and professional work on larger pattern pieces.

12 in / approx. 30 cm — Maximum reach for long straight cuts, heavier work and production environments. Best when the user is comfortable controlling the extra length and weight.

Red box or black box?

According to the product information on our store, the black-box version is intended for the Japanese domestic market and carries a “TOKYO” marking, while the red-box version is the export presentation and is marked as made in Japan. The box colour mainly identifies the market/version; select your shears by size, model, feel and intended use rather than assuming performance from packaging alone.

How to use them well

Keep the lower blade on the cutting table. Feed fabric toward the heel of the blades, use smooth full strokes, watch the cutting line just ahead of the tip, and guide the cloth without stretching it. Always test on a scrap of the same fabric before making an important cut.

Five care rules

Use the shears for fabric only; never cut paper, plastic, wire, zips or other hard materials. Do not drop them. Wipe away lint and moisture after use and avoid touching the cutting edges. Apply only a tiny amount of suitable oil at the pivot, then remove every trace of excess. Store the closed shears in their box or sheath and use a specialist when professional sharpening is needed.

The quiet advantage of a great tool

Good shears do not design the pattern for you. They simply translate its lines into fabric with accuracy and calm. That quiet reliability is the enduring appeal of Shozaburo.
